Just another busy day

Well, the boys got past the stomach virus so we're "back to normal" around here. Yesterday, I had the pleasure of finally meeting a local artist whose work I've admired for quite a while. We are in a yahoo group together. Maija and I had planned to meet at the museum for an exhibit and lunch in the cafe... only to find it closed on Monday so we switched museums and managed to salvage our time together. She was a joy to meet. Very easy to talk to and down to earth.

I also went and got my annual haircut yesterday. When I say annual, I truly mean it! I go get my hair cut like once a year and then I whack on it the rest of the year. It's just so frustrating being a hairdresser to have to go to someone to get my hair done. I always have to come home and fix something. I got about 4 inches cut off the length and more layering. Now, because of all the layering, I feel like I need a couple more inches off but then it will be shorter than I want. Oh well, it grows...and I wear it up all the time anyway.

I need some serious art time and don't know when I'll get it. I have Vacation Bible school coming up in just a few weeks and have prepped NOTHING for my class I'm teaching so I designated tomorrow morning for that since it's my last full morning before kids are out of school for the summer. When the boys get home tomorrow, I'll have them help wrap teacher gifts. I also got things for all the aids and the crossing guard so we have some wrapping to do!

Today was the last day of my women's Tuesday morning Bible study. We get out for the summer and start back up in September. I'll really miss it.

Oh, today, I went to a sorta' fabric outlet type place called SAS. It's been years since I've been there and I almost died... all the amazingly gorgeous fabric made me dizzy! I walked around with my mouth hanging open... and this stuff is CHEAP! And gosh, they had a ton of beaded trims for less than $2.99 a yard! At Joanne's, you pay a minimum of like oh, $8.99 a yard! I finally had to just leave because I was so overwhelmed. I'll be back soon though!

I just signed up for a cool class at a local store being taught by Sylvia Luna, a local artist who does great grungy stuff! That is coming up June 17 and is an all day class. I'm pumped up about it!

Well, I have a muscle problem going on in my shoulder today so I need a hot soak.... off I go...

I did it!!!

Well, I got my courage up and drew my asian girl and now my canvas is complete! I also added more dark color around the outside edges of the canvas and then painted more of the chinese newspaper and punched stars for the finishing touch on the canvas. I'm happy with it.

Try it Tuesday work

Well, I tried the technique again and am much happier with this 4th piece. It is a 10x14 canvas. I first adhered a page of Chinese newspaper and then did a peeling paper technique taught by Claudine Hellmuth. This peeled bits of the text away and gave some texture. Since I'm new to blogger, I don't know if you can click on the image to make it larger. If so, you'll get a better picture with the text showing through. Then, I started laying on washes of color. I used 2 shades of yellows, 3 shades of reds, a moss green and copper. The gesso stamping worked beautifully on this piece. I love this stamp. It was sent to me by an artist living in Japan so, techniqually, I've mixed languages on the piece but unless you read Chinese and Japanese, who knows? :) I'm wanting to do a line drawing of an oriental girl's face but I'm trying to get up my nerve! I'm totally new to drawing faces. And I'm so in love with this canvas now, I don't want to ruin it!

It's too early for a Saturday!!!

Well, last night, before going to bed I thought,"oh boy, tomorrow is Saturday! I don't have to take kids to school by 7:30! maybe I can sleep in a little!" NOT! Sam now has the stomach virus that Max had a few days ago. We've been up since 4:30. Between the two of them, I've had to completely throw out two new body pillows and one bed pillow! And between the two of them with a stomach virus and Max's diaper leaking all the time, I feel like i'm stripping sheets off of beds daily! It's getting really old!

I had planned to let the boys help me wash my van this morning but guess that isn't happening. I think I can declare it a pajama day though... and that's a good thing! :)

Yesterday, I woke in a complete fog and felt spaced out all morning. I did work on a few art things though. I joined a group called "Try it Tuesday http://tryittuesdays.wordpress.com/ which has a weekly tutorial. If you choose, you can do the weekly challenge of trying the tutorial, posting a picture of what you did, and your name is put in a pot for a drawing for the prize! I did three small canvas boards yesterday with the weeks background tutorial.

This first one I had to rework a couple of times but I was happy with it in the end. However, the gesso stamping didn't really show on this. I need some larger background type stamps. The second one was pretty easy and the technique seemed to work the best. I liked the colors and the affect the water spritz gave it. The third piece, the red, is one of my favorites. We were suppose to only use three colors though and I did add a 4th color to the outside edges. I'm thinking of doing something with an oriental feel to it for this canvas. Now, to figure out how to get my pictures to show up in the order I want them! I'm still trying to figure this blog stuff out! Please be patient with me!

Well, Sam is wanting the computer so I guess I'll stop now and be a nice mommy!

kinda' chicken fried

I have good intentions of keeping up with this blog regularly but life just seems to be a whirlwind right now. As the school year end nears next week, things are busier for my kids. And, I'm trying to cram in as much stuff as I can before they are home 24/7! I've not gotten to do any artwork in several days and I'm in need!

Max was home sick yesterday so that sorta' shot the whole day. Between cleaning, running errands, taking the cat to the vet, etc... today was productive with life stuff but no art today either. I think I need to take some art time tomorrow!

Max has decided he wants his name changed to Minky! Minky is a chimp that plays in the movie "Spymate"! Max's nickname has always been monkey... now he wants to be a real one and wants one for a pet! Oh brother... what next?!

The disfunction in my studio is making me nuts. My step-dad came over yesterday to help me determine what I'll need to put some peg board up so I can get some shelving and hooks for misc. things. That will clean up an art table and the floor underneath it! I'm still contemplating a storage system for ephemera that will work for me. I need something that makes sense. I'm thinking either clear plastic bins with categories... but drawers. If it's stackable and I have to move boxes to get things, I just won't use the stuff. That has already been proven! I also saw some really cool fabric storage boxes today at Bed, Bath & Beyond. They don't have tops on them so they are just open boxes. That may be worth looking into as well but, I really think the most clutterfree and functional solution will be the little units with plastic drawers that I could put side by side on a shelf. I'm also looking forward to having a place to display some artwork.

I'm so sleepy. I think I need a hot bath and to just go to bed!

Ah, I finally get to post again!

I kept trying to post but there was obviously a problem with blogger because it wouldn't let me do anything! So, I'm back.

I've been so stinkin' busy. I just love days at home. I did stay home today to catch up on laundry and stuff like that.

Yesterday, I had a dental appt. and then went bra shopping... which, in my book, is right up there with the dreaded bathing suit shopping. I had already gone a couple of weeks ago and purchased some but ended up returning them cuz they hurt after wearing them a short while. And I had tried on a bazillion already! I ended up at Nordstroms in Scottsdale and got fitted. I did buy some yesterday.. 3 different styles but a total of 4... 2 are alike... and are going back to the store tomorrow! ARHHHHH!!!! Why is it so hard to find something comfortable that fits?! Anyway, Nordstroms is at a mall that I never go to because of the driving distance but I may go back out tomorrow because they have a J.Jill store and I LOVE their clothes! I was running late picking the kids up from school yesterday so I didn't get to really look in there.

Sam's best friend, Daniel, came home from school with us and we all went to Costco. I learned a lesson... NEVER take 3 little boys with you to Costco! What should have taken maybe 30 minutes to shop for ended up taking an hour and a half! We barely got home that it was time to go to the kindergarten ice cream social at school! My kids are use to constant, all day long activity and both of them completely had major melt downs in the car and cried through their showers and kept crying until the passed out! It was a long day.

This morning, I met with a friend to discuss some things about our prayer room at church. I want to be involved in developing that room for it's intended purpose as well as making it inviting and comfortable to be in. I spent the remainder of the morning at home playing catch up. After picking the boys up from school, we stopped by the grocery store for a few things and then home.

Tomorrow, I'm just trying to decide about shopping... or doing art! I'm working on some Biblical alphabet cards for a swap. I have to do 27 cards. Every time I sign up for a swap like this, I'm reminded why I don't like doing them... I hate assembly line stuff. It's a real struggle for me. But I always love the end result of getting art from others!

I'm also discouraged with some paper I was making. I used some glue as a substitute and the result was very tacky, rubbery feeling paper that I can't use unless I figure out a solution. This was to be background paper for a hand page swap! Oh well... I need to crank on those. I just want to get these two projects finished so I don't have to think about them any more. I'm due to have the arrival of this months Circle Journal and will need to work on that book too.

Vacation Bible School is only 1 month away and I have to finish preparing for the collage journaling class I'll be teaching.

Chuck and I are wanting to go on a vacation this summer for a month but finding a house or condo to rent for a month on last minutes notice is proving difficult. We found a darling place in Sarasota, FL BUT, it's during hurricane season AND, it's so hot and humid there during the summer! We are looking into Aruba as well... found an amazing resort that has 5 different restaurants and all meals are included in the cost of the stay. The main drawback to this trip is the cost of airline tickets right now as well as flying all day with small children. Not something I look forward to. We're still trying to find something in CA. I think that would be perfect. We'll keep hoping...although, Aruba is really tempting me. I can't imagine a vacation right on the beach, in a resort where you don't have to even once say,"where do you want to go eat? I don't know. Where do you want to go? I don't know either. What do you feel like eating? I don't know... " and so it goes. At this resort, all your choices are within walking distance! So, not only would I not have to deal with food decisions (not even snacks!) there would be virtually no cleaning either! There's daily maid service for the room so, what a dream vacation!

Well, I"m pretty beat and need to go eat something for dinner.

It's about time...

Well, I've had a "blog" for a while with Xanga but haven't been so crazy about it. I've wanted to switch to Blogspot for a while now but just haven't made the time to set anything up. I'll have to work on it more later since it's been a long day and I want to go soak in the tub! I did, however, want to do my first photo post!

I just finished a piece artwork that was very fun to do. I've admired the work of Tom Phillips for a while now and have wanted to try altering a book page using the existing text to create new meaning and visuals to what I discovered amongst the text. I finally tried it. It took quite a while looking at several pages in a book of works by Emerson. I kept reading and waiting for words to pop out at me that actually made some kind of rational sense. So, this is my first attempt. It is on a 4x6 canvas which I did some random rubber stamping on first before collaging used tea bags onto it. I then mounted the book page and masked out the words I wanted to keep. I then stamped the "eye" and did some painting to cover the remaining text. When it was dry, I removed the masking fluid revealing my new message. I'm happy with the way it turned out. Looks sorta' mysterious, I think. In case you can't read what I created within the text, it says "in the sunshine, eyes see the images in your memory and discover the reality of the mind."
